ARCHITECT'S AND ENGINEER'S SPECIFICATIONS

The noise-operated automatic level adjustment device (NOALA) shall vary the output power from the system amplifier to any given zone in accordance with the varying ambient noise level existing in that zone. It shall be capable of operation from a 100/120/220/240V ac, 50/60 Hz line or from a 24/28V dc battery.
NOALA shall be capable of providing a change in gain up to 30 dB and adjustable down to a minimum change of not greater than 10 dB. Quench threshold shall occur at a nominal -22 dBm from either the paging channel input or the music channel input. The sensing of noise level shall be achieved by the speakers existing in the zone of interest and shall occur in the absence of paging or music. Under these conditions, the 70V line from the power amplifier feeding the speaker system is interrupted and the loudspeakers shall function as a microphone source sensing the noise level in their zones for use by NOALA to establish a control voltage representative of that noise level.
NOALA shall be capable of providing a pre-page sensing period by means of a sample pre/post switch to provide a noise sample when music program is of an uninterrupted nature. Under this mode of operation, noise shall be sensed for a period of 3 seconds, at which time a microphoneready indicator light at the page mic location shall provide indication that the operator may proceed with a page. NOALA shall incorporate an accessory socket which permits a preamplifier to be inserted enabling NOALA to accept the paging microphone directly into the paging channel. This socket shall also accept a bridging transformer for balanced line bridging operation.
NOALA shall be capable of operation in temperatures up to 55°C (131°F). NOALA shall be a standard 19-inch rackmountable panel, occupying not more than 31/z inches of rack space. Its dimensions shall be 3Yz" H x 19" W x 7'/z" D, its weight shall be 12 pounds, and its color shall be black.
The noise-operated automatic level adjustment device (NOALA) shall be the ALTEC Model 1605C.
